The villainous turn of Squid Game’s player 333 or Lee Myung-gi surprised the audiences. Myung-gi was a new character introduced in Season 2 of Squid Game. Despite past personal and professional mistakes, he looked to be on the right path of recovery.
In the starting, Myung-gi collaborated with Seong Gi-hun or Lee Jung-jae to save Kim Jun-hee’s child in Squid Game Season 3, Episode 5. As Myung-gi was the natural father of the child, and as per the direction of his character arc, this collaboration looked realistic. But this alliance was momentary, and at the end of Squid Game Season 3, Myung-gi fought against Gi-hun in the last round. Myung-gi wanted to murder her own child and deceive Gi-hun was really astonishing, but it matched the show’s theme and her character’s real nature.
Myung-gi: Final Villain Of Squid Game Season 3
Gi-hun was to deal with the villainous turn of the Myung-gi at the end of the season. Other villains including Nam-gyu (Roh Jae-won) and Im Jeong-dae (Song Young-chang) all were already defeated. Hwang Jun-ho, Woo-seok and Kang No-eul had to deal with antagonist threats outside the competition.
Even the dominant antagonist of seasons 2 and 3, Lee Byung-hun or Front Man, had some redemption in the end. The Front Man did the humanitarian work of saving the child, and ensured that the child and Gi-hun’s daughter were looked after afterward. Myung-gi was the final threat to his baby’s life. Myung-gi made sure that Gi-hun was eliminated before the finale so that he could fulfill his desire to kill the child.
Why Was Player 333 Willing to Kill His Own Baby?
Player 333 or Myng-gi was willing to kill his own baby to stay alive. If Myung-gi had waited until the finale to eliminate Gi-hun, both Myung-gi and the baby would have been declared winners, and they would have shared the cash prize. He also was in doubt that Gi-hun would let them win, meaning he would rather kill the baby than fight Player 456.
If Gi-hun died before the finale began, there would be no stopping Myung-gi from killing the baby and becoming the single winner. It was greed that characterized his actions, he didn’t want to share his hard-earned money with the people he had worked so hard for to reach the end of the game.
No Redemption For Myung-gi In Squid Game Season 3
Prior to being the main villain, he had proved in season 3 that he doesn’t deserve redemption. No matter how much he tried to justify himself, his decision to kill as many players as possible in the Squid Game’s weird version of hide and seek was driven by greed, as he was willing to commit murder again and again if it increased the reward money. This decision led to her fatally stabbing Cho Hyun-joo or Park Sung-hoon in the back while she was trying to help Joon-hee and the baby escape to safety. Only after stabbing Hyun-joo did he realize that she was actually helping Joon-hee and the baby, but he didn’t have to kill her.
Initially, Myung-gi helped Gi-hoo and the child for a while, as this allowed him to eliminate all other competitors and increase his winnings. If he really cared about the baby, he could have done more after the baby was born and not had to wait until the second round of the final game to help.
Considering that in previous episodes, Myung-gi always put himself first, any redemption of Myung-gi in the end feels forced and not right. Because Squid Game has always shown the best and worst of humankind, in the finale, Gi-hun showed the best, while Myung-gi showed the worst.
