Gonggi Nori is a traditional Korean game which is popular among children, especially in South Korea. It is also known as simply Gonggi game, Korean jacks, or knucklebones. Versions of the game have been found in different cultures around the world. It is featured as a third mini game in the six-legged pentathlon. It was initially played with animal bones or small pebbles, but nowadays you can play it with plastic pieces.
Gonggi Game Objective
This game consists of 5 levels. Players can play this game alone or with their friends.
In this game, the player who is in charge has to perform the Gonggi gameplay and complete all the levels by throwing the stones into the air and catching it, according to the rules of each level. Once all 5 levels are completed and the player finally captures all 5 stones, the team passes this mini-game.
Stones in this game are usually made of plastic with pebbles inside for weight. Players have to throw a Gonggi stone into the air, pick up another and catch the thrown stone. As the player progresses in the game, the challenges also increase with each level. With each level up, players have to pick up more stones. If the player misses a stone, they will have to start from the beginning again, no matter how many levels they have passed.
This game tests both accuracy and coordination, making it a significant challenge in the six-legged pentathlon.
Gameplay Of Each Level
Level 1: The players have to scatter all stones onto the flat surface. Toss one stone into the air, pick up another stone from the surface and catch the stone that is tossed in the air. Repeat the process until all 5 stones are collected.
Level 2: Again throw all stones onto the surface. Toss one stone into the air, pick up another two stones from the surface and catch the stone that is tossed in the air. Repeat the same process again and again until all 5 stones are collected.
Level 3: Throw all stones onto the surface. Toss one stone into the air, pick up another 3 stones from the surface and catch the stone that is tossed in the air. Toss 1 stone again into the air, pick up the remaining 5th stone from the surface and catch the tossed stone.
Note: Players can also pick up 3 stones first and then pick up 1 stone.
Level 4: Toss1 stone into the air, drop the remaining four stones onto the surface and catch the stone that was tossed into the air. Again toss the stone into the air, pick up all 4 stones from the surface and catch the tossed stone.
Level 5: Toss all 5 stones into the air, catch all 5 stones on the back of their hand;
Toss all 5 stones in the air again, and finally catch all 5 stones.
Note: If you make a mistake on any level and are unable to complete the task, you will have to end your turn without scoring and pass the pieces to the next player.
How does the game end?
The game ends when all players have had a chance to play, even if they fail and get no scores. And the player with the most points wins the game.
Or the player can set the goal first. For example, the player who scores 30 points first wins the Gonggi game.
